Copilot shortcuts now appear directly on the report ribbon and in visual headers. One click generates a plain-English summary of what a visual shows, which makes it practical to share reports with executives who won't dig into the data themselves.
The April 2026 update upgraded Copilot in Power BI Mobile from a basic summarizer to a full back-and-forth chat assistant. Users can ask follow-up questions, explore drivers of numbers, and get AI-generated visualizations from their phone, with every answer citing the exact visuals it referenced.
Copilot now generates M code and DAX from plain-English descriptions. Describe the transformation you need, and Copilot writes the query. This is the right approach for analysts who understand what they want but aren't fluent in DAX syntax.
A new unified Get Data panel in Power BI Desktop, currently in preview, makes connecting to data sources significantly faster and more discoverable.
The Q&A Deprecation You Can't Ignore
The most operationally significant change of 2026: Microsoft is deprecating the Q&A visual and "Ask a question" tool by December 2026.
These have been staples of self-service BI deployments for years. Organizations that built dashboards around Q&A will need to migrate to Copilot-powered experiences before the cutoff. That migration isn't free, and it isn't trivial.
Copilot requires either a Fabric capacity or Power BI Premium capacity. Pro licenses alone won't cut it. Your workspace must also be assigned to a Copilot-enabled capacity with tenant admin approval, and your reports need to be semantically clean for Copilot to work well.
If your organization runs on Pro licensing, the Q&A deprecation creates real urgency to evaluate capacity upgrades. The cost-benefit math changes significantly when a core feature disappears on a fixed deadline.
Making Your Reports Copilot-Ready
Copilot works by interpreting the structure and naming of your semantic model to map user questions to the right data. A poorly named model, with tables called "Fact_TBL_v3" and measures called "Calc1", will produce irrelevant or incorrect responses. Full stop.

Name Everything for the Business, Not the Database
Every table, column, and measure should be named as if a non-technical business user will read it. "Monthly Revenue" is right. "Rev_Mnthly_Agg" is not. Copilot interprets these names directly to understand what data maps to what question, so ambiguous or abbreviated naming creates ambiguous or wrong answers.
Trim the Schema
Bloated data models with dozens of redundant columns increase the chance Copilot selects the wrong field. Before enabling Copilot features for end users, audit your model: hide calculation-only columns, remove deprecated measures, and cut fact table columns down to what's actually needed for reporting.
Write Measure Descriptions
Power BI now supports adding descriptions to individual DAX measures. These descriptions feed directly into Copilot's understanding of each metric. A measure called "Net Promoter Score" with a description of "Average NPS across active customers, trailing 12 months, excluding one-time buyers" gives Copilot far more to work with than the name alone.
Mark Your Date Table
Copilot's time-intelligence features, like "show me last quarter vs. this quarter," require a properly marked date table. Without one, Copilot's time-based answers will be unreliable. This isn't optional infrastructure anymore.
